ABOUT THE ARTIST:

Through painting, drawing and engraving, Nadjim Zoubir uses successive, small gestures to create comparatively vast and truly mesmerizing surfaces. These are softly set in motion by the delineative and careful elliptical patterning. Zoubir therein manages to not only reconciliate drastically different scales but also succeeds to merge mindsets of extreme alertness and oblivion.

Zoubir’s process reflects the highly intimate and introspective nature of the meticulous gestures as well as the secretive and thoughtful approach the artist has towards his work. When the viewer moves back and forth between the redundancy and consistency of the pattern to the organic and overflowing nature of the whole, they might acknowledge that the work speaks, on more general terms, of how a surging sentiment of a unifying and general transcendence can be naturally derived from regular sequences or rhythmic and meditative habits. The patterning and its almost imperceptibly repetitive nature reflects the sensible and immersive essence of any kind of maintained habit; as something simultaneously rigorous, effortless and revitalizing.

In aspiring to coherence and harmony of the whole through the consistency and insistence of its parts, Zoubir’s work invites us in the intimacy of his process and contemplation of an impalpable and fleeting pictorial world.
